Whole Person Approach

Addressing the Needs of the Whole Person is Our Priority And Obligation

Walden’s staff has learned that successful treatment begins with an in-depth understanding of the patient and a comprehensive plan for treating the whole person – body, mind and spirit.

Even before a patient is admitted to one of Walden’s programs, a team of specialists evaluates the patient. We need to know not only the scope of the patient’s illness, but the patient’s medical and psychiatric history. We need to know whether there are any co-occurring disorders, what medication the patient is taking and whether family or others are available to provide support. We also need to know about any treatment programs the patient has participated in previously – what has worked, what has not and why.

To gather all of this vital patient information, we rely on our multidisciplinary team of experienced and dedicated doctors, nurse practitioners, nurses, dietitians, counselors, social workers, expressive therapists and mental health counselors.

Once we have gathered the patient’s information, we develop a plan for treating the whole person. Using our whole person approach, the patient’s medical, psychiatric, behavioral and spiritual needs are addressed at the same time. If the patient has more than one disorder the co-occurring disorders are treated concurrently.

As part of Walden’s whole person approach the staff also recognizes and encourages patients to access resources outside of the care we offer, such as family, friends and other supports that can aid them during their treatment and when they are in recovery.

This integrated approach to treatment is not only helping our staff improve patient care, it is also producing better recovery outcomes for our patients.
